Saturday Enrichment Institute
The BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Saturday Enrichment Institute is an Out-of-School-Time (OST) program serving dynamic girls in the NY Metropolitan area. Programs take place on Saturdays from 11-6PM. Each year our participants attend over 368 hours of OST instruction in art based enrichment programs, leadership & life skills seminars, technology and entrepreneurship sessions, academic tutoring, cultural & critical literacy workshops, college preparation courses and career development advisories. Eligible applicants are dynamic young women who are enrolled in middle school or high school and who are also between the ages of twelve and seventeen.
Participants engage in an intensive academic enrichment, college preparation, and career readiness program. We offer our mentees extensive academic tutoring and study skills sessions to enhance their scholarship. In addition, our intensive college prep workshop offers resources such as PSAT and SAT prep, exclusive information panels with admissions officers from prestigious colleges and universities, college tours, scholarship consulting and guidance counseling. Juniors and seniors participate in career readiness seminars that focus on business communications: resume development, cover letter writing, presentations, and mock interviews.
This is a year-round comprehensive musical program that incorporates technical DJ training and music history education.
I would absolutely recommend BGR Queens camp to a friend. This is because I’ve gained so many sisters from all over the world. I’ve gained self-confidence and empowerment. I’ve learned that its not okay to settle for anything less than you want. I’ve gained all of the things needed to be a success in life and i would want my friend to become a better person and to experience all that I have experienced if no more.
This series of writing workshops engage young women around the themes of sisterhood, self-love, empowerment, current events, critical literacy, and social change theory.
Influential women from diverse industries engage mentees in positive discourses. Sessions expose participants to the stepping-stones for success via higher educational opportunities, strong work-ethic, discovering one’s individual voice and becoming positive role models for our global community.
I just want to personally thank you and tell you how much I appreciate you. Because of your vision and willingness to give something to the community, other young ladies and myself continue to be proud of the skin we are in and realize that we are the true embodiment of everything we aspire to be. Thanks for introducing me to my love of tap dance, DJing and to every other artistic workshop we took. The plays, shows, conferences, empowerment circles and taste the world sessions all had the biggest part to play in me choosing a college. BGR helped me to discover my love for all things arts and justice related. I love my people and you for being such a monumental part of my life.
Students benefit from introductory classroom instruction in the art of contemporary and classic guitar. Participants will study solo and ensemble performance, technique, music reading, interpretation, stage etiquette and music literature.
Broadway and off-Broadway works are followed by interviews and panel discussions with performers. This program is designed to expand mentees’ cultural and artistic horizons. These experiences increase their knowledge of careers within the performing arts and entertainment fields.
“Making the foreign familiar through an in depth understanding of the vibrant techniques and culture of the foods of the world.”
The Black Girls Rock ‘Taste The World’ program predisposes young women to different cultures through their sense of taste.
